IMATRA, Finland -- Canada lost more than just its final preliminary-round game at the world under-18 hockey tournament Tuesday. Kirill Pilipenko scored in the shootout to earn Russia a 3-2 win over Canada, the defending champions first defeat at the event. But the Canadians also lost forward Brayden Point to an upper-body injury in the first period thats expected to sideline him for the reminder of the tournament. Russian Danil Vovchenko drove Point head-first into the boards at 7:23 of the first. Vovchenko received a five-minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct on the play. "Thats a huge loss for our side," Canadian team coach Kevin Dineen said. "Hes a big part of so many facets of our game. "He plays on both of our special teams and centres the top line. Hes a big loss but thats the advantage, we have other people to fill roles." Point had an assist in Canadas four preliminary-round games but the five-nine, 160-pound Calgary native recorded 36 goals and 55 assists in 72 games this season with the WHLs Moose Jaw Warriors. Pilipenko scored on Russias first shot of the shootout against Canadian goalie Mason McDonald. But it was all the offence the Russians needed as Canadas Conner Bleackley, Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen all couldnt beat goalie Alexander Trushkov. Trushkov replaced Maxim Tretiak, the grandson of legendary Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak, to start the shootout. "Thats tournament hockey," Dineen said. "Obviously were disappointed it ended like that but you take a breath, look at the big picture and say our team earned points in all four games and finished first in our side of the pool." Vladislav Kamenovs power-play goal with 35 remaining in regulation forced overtime. Mathew Barzal and Travis Konecny scored for Canada (3-0-0-1, 10 points), which still finished atop Group A despite the loss. The Canadians will resume tournament action Thursday in a quarter-final game against Switzerland. Ivan Nikolishin had the other goal for Russia (1-0-2-1, eight points), which needed a win in regulation over Canada to finish first in Group A. Konecny opened the scoring at 1:49 of the second period before Nikolishin replied just 27 seconds into the third. Barzal put Canada ahead 2-1 at 7:40 before Kamenov converted on the man advantage at 19:25. Dineen, who led the Canadian womens team to Olympic gold in Sochi, Russia, said he was pleased with his teams defensive play against Russia, especially with the man advantage. The Russians finished 1-for-5 on the power play. "I really give our guys credit . . . they came out and guys were blocking shots, making plays along the boards," Dineen said. "I give the Russians a lot of credit, they really did a good job with their possession game and created a lot of chances. "Obviously your goaltender has to be extremely large and Mason played a whale of a game for us." McDonald likely earned himself the start for the Canadians in the quarter-final game. He stopped 29 shots as Russia outshot Canada 31-25. "Mason McDonald was the player of the game," Dineen said. "I think its going to be pretty hard for us to pull away from him. "He played a heck of a game." Ted Lindsay Red Wings Jersey Authentic . A strong fastball. A big, bending curveball that can buckle hitters at the knees. Against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, Elias put the entire package together against one of the leagues strongest lineups. Darren Helm Red Wings Jersey . For one, he still gets to crank the intensity to the max. "I push pretty angry. I ran pretty angry too though, but I have fun doing it," Lumsden said. . Its the games against the leagues struggling franchises that have proved to be an issue. Alex Delvecchio Red Wings Jersey . According to a release sent by the league, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were the only team to exceed the cap. Their total salary expenditure of $4,417,975 was $17,975 over the salary cap of $4. Former England opener Nick Knight, part of our Sky Sports commentary team in India, has been analysing the teams theyre up against…England Nick says: The squad is packed with fresh-faced, incredibly-talented individuals and there is flexibility in the batting order, with the option of promoting players like Jos Buttler up the order. Questions remain though, do they know what their best starting XI is and just how dependable is their fielding under pressure? England lost their last two T20 games against South Africa - their fifth defeat in a row in white-ball cricket - but before that they had won six T20 matches in a row, one of them after a Super Over. Keep your eye on Adil Rashid in what is an inexperienced bowling line-up. He has a crucial role to play, but you feel England will need six exceptionally good performances from him to lift the trophy. Adil Rashid: his variety could be crucial to Englands title hopes Record: 2007 - Super Eights; 2009 - Super Eights; 2010 - Winners; 2012 - Super Eights; 2014 - Super 10sSquad: Eoin Morgan (C), Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Liam Dawson, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, James Vince, David WilleySky Bet tournament winner odds*: 6/1, enhanced to 8/1South AfricaNick says: Their potent batting line-up boasts arguably the best one-day batsman in the world, AB de Villiers. Imran Tahir goes into the tournament with some confidence after performing well against England but I wonder how effective the spin options offered by Aaron Phangiso and JP Duminy will be. Much will hinge on just how fit Dale Steyn is. South Africa remain an outstanding fielding side and possess a strong, powerful late middle-order with the likes of Chris Morris coming to the fore and showing a big-match temperament with bat and ball. Given the number of players they have with IPL experience, they should be good for a semi-final berth but do they have what it takes to win the tournament? Kyle Abbott and Chris Morris celebrate victory over England in February Record: 2007 - Super Eights; 2009 - Semi-Finals; 2010 - Super Eights; 2012 - Super Eights; 2014 - Semi-FinalsSquad: Faf du Plessis (C), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Chris Morris, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Dale Steyn, David WieseSky Bet tournament winner odds*: 5/1Sri LankaNick says: This is a very different-looking squad from that which won the title in 2014 following the retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Some experienced faces remain - Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Rangana Herath to name three but, there are a lot of new faces too. They have a great record in this tournament - and global tournaments in general - but this is something of a step into the unknown in some regards, although theyve had a chance to acclimatise to conditions during the Asia Cup. Watch out for Thisara Perera - a player more than capable of thriving with bat and ball on Indias slow pitches. Thisara Perera: could he prove to be Sri Lankas trump card? Record: 2007 - Super Eights; 2009 - Finalists; 2010 - Semi-Finals; 2012 - Finalists; 2014 - WinnersSquaad: Angelo Mathews (C), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal, Rangana Herath, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Dasun Shanaka, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru ThirimanneSky Bet tournament winner odds*: 16/1West IndiesNick says: Will all the off-field distractions hurt their chances? Upheaval has been such a part of their recent history that their players tend to just get on with the job.dddddddddddd When you look down the squad and look at the ability of some of their individuals, you have to say theyve got a chance but admittedly the loss of Sunil Narine is a big blow. But even without him and the players like Kieron Pollard, they have game-changers. The batting can be dependent on Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, while the performances of captain Darren Sammy could be the key to their success. Their strength lies in their array of all-rounders with IPL experience, which means they bat deep. Will West Indies put an early dent in Englands title bid on Wednesday? Record: 2007 - Group Stage; 2009 - Semi-Finals; 2010 - Super Eights; 2012 - Winners; 2014 - Semi-FinalsSquad: Darren Sammy (C), Samuel Badree, Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome TaylorSky Bet tournament winner odds*: 12/1AfghanistanNick says: This is definitely a team to look out for and one that could cause a few waves in the group. Afghanistan possess a dynamic and varied bowling attack led by Dawlat Zadran and Hamid Hassan, both of whom have the ability to bowl at 145kph. They are supported by two good leg-spinners and a very canny off-spin bowler in former captain Mohammad Nabi. The batting revolves around the powerful Mohammad Shahzad, who takes some good form into the Super 10s from the opening games. Coached by Inzamam-ul-Haq, theyve proved they can play smart cricket under pressure - a quality they will need in the coming weeks. Mohammad Shahzad - has struck 142 runs at 47.33 in the tournament so far Record: 2010 - Group Stage; 2012 - Group Stage; 2014 - Group StageSquad: Ashgar Stanikzai (C), Usman Ghani, Hamid Hassan, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Hamza Hotak, Karim Khan, Shafiqullah Shafaq, Mohammad Shahzad, Samiullah Shenwari, Dawlat Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, Noor Ali, Shapoor ZadranSky Bet tournament winner odds*: 200/1* Odds correct as of 14th March 2016.
