renegotiation bump on Covingto
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Martellus Bennett is playing for the New England Patriots now, and Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews found some humor in it.

The Packers cut Bennett last week with the designation that he failed to disclose a physical condition, and then Bennett fired back by saying he needed surgery but claimed that team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie tried to make him play, which is exactly what Bennett did after the Patriots claimed him off waivers.

"We all got a good laugh from it," Matthews said. "It is what it is. Martellus is in their locker room now and not here anymore. So now we're just focused on the guys we have in here."
Although Matthews wouldn't say outright that Bennett was willing to play hurt for Tom Brady but not Packers backup Brett Hundley, the Packers Pro Bowl linebacker said: "He seemed to suit up and Amara Darboh Jersey looked good on Sunday night."
"You know what, I think everybody knows the story there -- we don't need to talk about it much more," Matthews added. "Like I said, we're focused on the guys in the locker room, but it's an interesting Authentic Stephen Vogt Jersey story that will probably be talked about for a while."Bennett caught three passes for 38 yards on Sunday in his return to the Patriots, where he played last season before he signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Packers in March. The deal contained a $6.3 million signing bonus, and the Packers are expected to go after the unamortized portion of that, which totals $4.2 million.
After Sunday's game, his first since rejoining the Patriots, Bennett explained how he found himself back on the field in a different jersey."I talked to six or seven doctors about [the shoulder injury], and it could go either way, and it was one of those things that I felt like should get fixed," Bennett said Sunday. "And then after trying to get it fixed and getting waived, you just got that vengeance in your heart. You're like, 'All right, that's how you're going to do it? Then ... let's go ball.'"
Matthews, however, is skeptical of Bennett's version of the details and is ready to move on."Like I said, we all know the story," Matthews said. "We've got more than capable tight ends on the team who've been around here for a while. They're more than up for the challenge, whatever it is, each and every week."
Matthews joined current Packers players Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers, who, among others, defended McKenzie. Former players also have spoken out on his behalf.
"My experience has been fantastic with Pat," Matthews said. "I think he's an awesome doc. I think he puts our health in front of the team first and foremost. In fact, I think a lot of people have gotten on his case because he's too conservative. So I wouldn't put much merit into those comments made. I think it really speaks volumes to hear everybody's rebuttal and come to his aid in that regard as opposed to the other person."CHICAGO -- The Champions Classic has been around for seven years. While the star power and matchups are compelling, the event itself often has played out like the November basketball that it is.
In six previous iterations, there have been exactly two one-possession games and not a single overtime or memorable finish. There have been more double-digit victories, including a 32-point rout of Kansas by Kentucky in 2014, than close encounters.
ADVERTISEMENTMore to the point, if NCAA tournament success is the bottom line, this event has produced only two champions: Kentucky (2012) and Duke (2015). There have been more first-round NCAA losers from the Champions field -- shoutouts to Lehigh, Mercer and Middle Tennessee -- and Kentucky was one-and-done in the NIT the year after its last title.
But the 2017-18 season Womens Rudy Gobert Jersey feels a bit special, at least on the court, and no one in the sport would be surprised if multiple teams that gathered here on Tuesday are playing five months from now in San Antonio's Final Four. Let's take the participants, in order of the matchups, and plot their most likely path and pitfalls between now and April:Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington is finalizing a four-year, $62 million contract extension, league sources told ESPN.
Sixers general manager Bryan Colangelo and Covington's representatives with CAA Sports are expecting a signed agreement as soon as the end of this week, league sources said.
The deal will include a $15 million renegotiation bump on Covington's $1.57 million salary this season, plus an additional four years that will keep Covington under contract through the 2021-22 season. The $15 million renegotiation is the largest single-season figure negotiated since that became an available contractual avenue in the NBA.
Discussions on Covington's deal -- including the ability to formalize the renegotiation on his 2017-18 salary and the new extension -- became allowable on Wednesday under the league's collective bargaining agreement.
For the 76ers, the balloon payment on the 2017-18 season allows the team increased salary-cap space and payroll flexibility for upcoming seasons, when Philadelphia plans to be aggressive in free agency. The Sixers could have $25 million in salary-cap space this summer.
Covington, one of the NBA's most versatile forwards, could have become an unrestricted free agent in July, but the Sixers' $15.1 million in available cap space allowed Covington to execute the renegotiation on the 2017-18 salary once he reached the third anniversary date -- Nov. 15 -- of his original four-year contract.Covington is in the midst of his best NBA season, averaging 16 points and shooting 50 percent on 3-pointers. The deal solidifies Covington as one of the franchise's core future players, along with burgeoning stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.
An undrafted player out of Tennessee State who started with the Lenny Dykstra Youth jersey Houston Rockets before getting released and signing into the G League, Covington has developed into one of the NBA's elite wing defenders and a consistent 3-point shooting threat. He has had 29- and 31-point performances against the Washington Wizards and the LA Clippers, respectively, this season, and he continues to guard multiple positions and players on the floor.
Covington is the 76ers' longest-tenured player. He has averaged 12.9 points and 5.6 rebounds in his four-plus seasons with Houston and Philadelphia.¬e=1626509
